Stephen Fitzpatrick, Founder of Ovo Energy

Stephen Fitzpatrick, was so fed up dealing with large energy companies with complicated, expensive and confusing tariffs he decided to start his own. A big step. Especially as Stephen’s background wasn’t in the energy business. But that meant he didn’t start with any preconception of how things are ‘normally’ done. Just a vision on how things ‘should’ be done.

In Stephen’s words: “I just couldn’t understand why the energy business was so complex and service so poor. Everyone kept telling me it wouldn’t be possible for someone outside of the industry to come in and make energy cheaper, greener and simpler. I’m very pleased to have proved them wrong!”

It’s because Stephen was thinking like a customer that the business is built around the idea of making your life as simple as possible. That’s what makes dealing with us so much easier… and nicer. With Ovo everything is more straightforward and our UK based customer service team are always on hand to help. We’re open and honest and we do everything we can to keep our prices low, while still offering more renewable energy in our standard tariff than other energy providers. Thomas Jeffs, Founder of ResponsibleIT CIC

ResponsibleIT CIC tackles youth unemployment by providing a 1-3 year I.T. Apprenticeship to people aged 16-24. Our mission is to help young people with a passion and talent for I.T. start a successful career. Our vision is we will be as successful as Jamie Olivers 15 Foundation has been with chefs, but with young aspiring I.T. engineers.

Half an Apprentices time is spent providing I.T. support to home users and charities; the rest of their time is spent studying towards: an NVQ level 2 in Customer Service; and achieving the 7 Microsoft exams you need to pass to become a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE). Once they have their MCSE and 1-3 years commercial experience providing I.T. support we recruit them out to companies in need of a good junior I.T. engineer.

We aim to be self-sustaining in 2011, with our primary income coming from providing I.T. support to home users, charities and other Third Sector organisations in London. ResponsibleIT CIC also recycles old computers into poor housing and the Third Sector. Find out more here, www.responsibleit.co.uk

Alan Ramsay, Founder Roots and Wings CIC

Roots and Wings C.I.C is a design consultancy that provides two main services; Community workshops, and Graphic Design.

We deliver creative community workshops in animation, art, music and creative writing to disadvantaged sections of our immediate communities (predominantly the East-End of Newcastle- amongst the 10% most deprived Wards in England according the IMD). We also provide design services in the form of websites, logos and innovation consultancy to local projects and local businesses with a green or community ethos (profits made from this are reinvested into our community work).

We don’t see these as distinct activities. We apply design thinking to problems, be they in business or society, tackling them with creative solutions using a multi-disciplinary approach. Our core team is made up of an artist, a creative writer, a musician, a designer and a digital media aficionado.

We’re also passionate about local creative talent, we employ it in our community workshop and design teams, and we support and showcase it through our music studio, our pop up gallery and the events we run.
